• It's 2031, seventeen years after authorities in seventy-nine countries decided collectively to combat global warming with the coolant CW-7. The result was the Earth being immediately sent into a deep freeze, killing all human life except a handful who now live on an "ark", a revolutionary train built before 2014 by a train aficionado named Wilford (Ed Harris), the train which at that time was considered useless and self-indulgent. The train is required to be constantly moving to generate energy for life inside, it which circumnavigates the globe on a single continuous track once every year. The train is still controlled in all of its aspects by Wilford, who has created three separate classes housed in different parts of the train: the privileged "one percent", who are at the front of the train, the workers who support both ends and occupy the middle of the train, and the "tail people", the masses who live at the back of the train like cattle in a windowless cattle car, they being solely fed protein bars, whose ingredients the tail people do not know. The face of Wilford's ideology to those in the tail end is Minister Mason (Tilda Swinton), as Wilford never ventures to that end of the train. Some of the policies which Wilford has implemented is taking many of the children from the tail end for an unknown purpose never to be seen by the people in the tail end again, and committing occasional indiscriminate genocide in the tail end, most of the tail people believing as a method of population control, and to demonstrate his dictatorial power in an effort to have a complacent populace amongst the masses. There have been many attempts of revolution by the tail people in the past, all quashed by Wilford. Curtis (Chris Evans), one of the tail people, wants to attempt another revolution, he believing all past attempts having failed because they have focused on Wilford, as opposed to what he feels needs to occur for power: take control of the engine at the front. Supporting Curtis in this fight are, amongst others: Gilliam (Sir John Hurt), the wise old man; Edgar (Jamie Bell), who Curtis took under his wing when he became orphaned in the early years; and Tanya (Octavia Spencer) and Andrew (Ewen Bremner), who want to find their children taken away. Along the way, they have to co-opt Namgoong Minsoo (Song Kang-ho), an addict of a synthetic hallucinogen called Kronole, he who designed the security system, namely the locking mechanism of the gates between all the train cars. As Curtis and his team try to work their way from car to car from the tail to the front, their priorities are influenced by what they see, what they learn, and by revelations including secrets from their individual pasts

I had to think long and hard about how to score this movie because I will say that at least it tried to do something, which is more than I can say for most movies these days. however what it did do was more baffling than interesting.
Quickly to recap:

• A guy makes a vacation type train that can somehow circle around the globe (across oceans I guess) connecting with other train lines in a big circle. Train has a shoddy perpetual motion device that somehow has parts that break down and require little children to power because - Apparently to be self containing the ship needs to have rich people vs poor people. I believe this was supposed to be analogous to how life works in the real world. The guy who made the train occasionally prompts the poor people he has living at the back of the train start riots so as to allow for the killing of some people. for some reason this 'balances' out the 'Eco-system' on the train - This story is the last time this type of prompt happens because I guess the creator didn't really think it through very well. li>

Others have listed the countless plot-holes that I would agree with. Most of the movie I was saying: What. Why. How?

Struggle through the confusion of the 'science' and 'reason' behind what is happening and your left with what seems like a redemption story combined with a story that tries to portray the weird eccentric breaking free from the nature of society to play with a polar bear in the cold.

3 stars for interesting set, 2 marks for some bizarre acting, 1 mark for at least keeping my attention while I tried to figure out if I was losing my mind or if the story actually didn't make sense.

The “ladies man” literally looks like a greasy cashew like

This looked cool right up until it showed the transformation. I really am so sick of vampire movies at this point, I just can't get remotely excited about them any more. The movie has its faults, but it's one of the most satisfying and entertaining movies to watch. Chris Evans' character, Curtis, is one of the best in any movie. Boarding the train at seventeen years-old, Curtis probably survives at first through sheer strength. Willingly participating in the cannibalism of the weak, starting at the same time as those first ones succumb to it. He even kills a mother and almost kills her newborn to eat the both of them, but at that point he is moved by the self-sacrifice of an old man who cuts off his own arm in exchange for the babe's life. Others follow suit, cutting off their arms for others to eat, and Curtis is moved by this. He even tries to cut off his own arm, but only scars himself. So he is a good and strong person, but extremely fearful. The newborn whom the old man saved becomes his best friend. Fast-forward seventeen years. This is when we meet Curtis. He's a Captain-America type, and we can't understand why he refuses the role of leader he seems fit for; we see him rubbing a scar, an old heroic act perhaps? He even primes himself enough to run at an enemy's gun, put it to his head and shoot. I think people who didn't watch the movie till the end reveal saw a pretty generic protagonist here, and didn't really connect. When you know how he began, rewatching all his decisions either make the decisions seem less or more heroic. Like when he sacrifices Edgar. When he puts the gun to his head. When he refuses leadership. When he finally sacrifices his arm painfully for another kid.

I thought that you used very good analogies to history since history was all that I've seen. This system, seeming like it is controlled by individuals provides fuel for those who are either already making it or have the opportunity. However, if you visit impoverished neighborhoods and deeply analyze the opportunities for escaping it, you will see the design.

Most import: please take the time to figure out the difference between Free Market and Capitalism. Capitalists describe it as deregulation which means no gov't interference while they dominate markets and wipe out independent competition with price fixing and trusts until they are gone. Much of US Constitution was about limiting their power to ensure opportunity and corporation/limited liability had to be approved by Congress for a specific vital service for a brief few years. No provisions were made for the existence of megacorporations because they thought it obvious that is what they were fighting in the Revolution. They were breaking East Indies Company and other royal monopolies ability to dump or squeeze the Colonies and an honest smuggler couldn't make a living.

I decided to watch this film, because of all the positive reviews. How anybody could give this piece of garbage more than 2 stars, is beyond me.
I really liked Joon-ho Bongs' Korean blockbuster "The Host. And in particular the Snowpiercer actress Ah-sung Ko, who played the young girl in the Host. And I expected more from great actors like Ed Harris and John Hurt. But nothing could save this ridiculous movie.
The train cars were much bigger on the inside, than the outside. The path covered the whole world. Why not just go around in circles in a smaller area. Where did they get the beef and chickens? Where was the feed for the animals? Why did the super high tech train need 5 year old children to operate?
The prison was just drawers, where they froze you, with no apparent side effects. Why feed them cockroaches and where did they come from? Why not grow something else: anything else to feed them. Nothing in this film made any sense.
I think the most stomach turning scene had the Chris Evans character talking about how all the people in the rear were starving, so they started voluntarily chopping off their limbs to eat. (And that babies taste best.) So the owner of this amazing high tech train, who willingly let everybody on, did not even think of food?
This film is just awful.
